There is something important that need to be brought up. There are many people who love this album but there are those who are turned off because of the sound and production of the album. For those who feel that way, it is because you might have to listen to it a least 3 or 4 times to get it like Glen Benton himself said in an old interview with Rip Magazine.
Deicide's Once Upon The Cross ranked number 11 in the Top 100 Death Metal Albums of all time
This album marks another chapter for Deicide. The album is a little bit more technical but the band still retains all of the basic element that make them such an unstoppable force. So this is basically another opus of straight forward, evil, satanic, haunting, hellish, blasphemous, pulverizing, hellfire and brimstone, heavy, brutal death metal assult officially approved by the sinister majesties of Hell. Essential to the collection of every death metalhead.
Choice Cuts: Once Upon The Cross, Christ Denied, When Satan Rules His World, Kill The Christian, They Are The Children Of The Underworld and Behind The Light Thou Shell Rise
With this album, it is another direction for the band. Musically, the band still delievers the evil goods and a whole more. All of the basical elements that make the band what they are as an important death metal force are all retained along with some trips to new territories. That can be felt throughout the album. Lyrically, the band still maintains their satanic stance but the lyrics tend to deal more with the corruption of Chrstainity and religion as well as other serious issues rather than the typical "Satan, Satan, Satan" and supernatural contents of the past. The band doesn't let down at all through. They're only progressing in their dark craft.
Choice Cuts: Serpents Of The Light, Bastard Of Christ, Blame It On God, I Am No One, Believe The Lie, The Truth Above and Father' Bakers
Deicide: Scars Of The Crucifix - With this album, it's the return to fold of Deicide. When a die-hard Deicide fan listens to this album for the first time, they will hear Deicide that way they were in their former glory. The music is pretty much a mix of Legion, Once Upon The Cross and Serpents Of The Light. This is very evident throughout the album. For exemple, lets take Go Now Your Lord Is Dead. At the end of the last chorus, the songs going in to that evil, doomsday-like sound with a solo attack almost like with the ending of Behead The Prophet (No Lord Shell Live) from Legion. Evidences like these are found throughout the album. The lyrics are pretty much a mix of the old "Satan, Satan, Satan" thing and subjects dealing with the corruption of Christainity and religion. Much more like Once Upon The Cross. All and all, it is an album for the true Deicide die-hards and as well as an album that reconciles with fans that the band lost because Insinerehym and In Torment In Hell.
Choice Cuts: Scars Of The Crucifix, Made At God, Fuck Your God, When Heaven Burn, From Darkness Come, Go Now Your Lord Is Dead and The Pentecostal
